Minarc

Founded in 1999 by Erla Dögg Ingjaldsdóttir and Tryggvi Thorsteinsson, MINARC is an internationally recognized architecture and interior design studio based in Santa Monica, California. Known for its contemporary minimalist approach, the studio creates thoughtful residential, commercial, and public spaces that merge modern aesthetics with sustainable design principles.

MINARC’s work ranges from custom homes and large-scale renovations to innovative commercial and public projects. Each design is rooted in a strong connection to nature, emphasizing natural light, open floor plans, seamless indoor-outdoor living, and carefully framed views that enhance the experience of a space. Inspired by the landscapes and design philosophy of Iceland, MINARC creates environments that feel calm, timeless, and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Holistic & Sustainable Design

At the core of MINARC’s philosophy is a holistic and environmentally conscious approach to architecture. The studio is committed to creating spaces that are not only visually striking, but also healthier, more efficient, and more sustainable for the people who live in them.

MINARC is known for its innovative use of sustainable and low-impact materials, including reclaimed wood, recycled rubber, recycled glass, cement panels, steel framing, and other environmentally responsible building systems. The studio also incorporates passive design strategies such as natural cross-ventilation, energy-efficient layouts, and an emphasis on daylight to reduce reliance on artificial systems whenever possible.
Complementing these sustainable elements is the use of warm natural materials including walnut, birch, and ipe wood, bringing texture, durability, and balance to each project. The result is architecture that feels modern yet inviting, refined yet deeply livable.

Awards & Recognition

MINARC’s innovative approach to sustainable modern architecture has earned the studio international recognition and numerous design awards over the years. The firm has received honors including IIDA Calibre Awards, International Design Awards (IDA), and multiple awards from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), recognizing its leadership in contemporary architecture, interior design, and environmentally conscious building practices.

Today, MINARC continues to push the boundaries of modern sustainable architecture through forward-thinking design, innovative technologies, and a continued commitment to creating spaces that positively impact both people and the environment.
